Spend your first year with us at the International Study Centre, where you’ll gain essential skills and knowledge. After successfully completing the International Year One programme, you can progress directly to the second year of your law degree, smoothly transitioning into your undergraduate studies at Teesside University.

Your modules
Over three terms, you will gain a solid foundation in legal principles, boost your study skills and enhance your English proficiency. Please note that you are expected to attend 100% of your classes at the International Study Centre or you will be at risk of losing your student visa.
In our International Year One in Law, you will study these modules:
Academic English Skills aims to provide thorough training in the language and related academic skills which will enable international students to best achieve their academic potential at university. Our Academic English programme is validated by UK ENIC, the UK government agency responsible for providing information and expert opinion on qualifications and skills worldwide.
You will develop awareness and competency in a range of language-related academic skills, including the processes of academic writing, effective and extensive reading strategies, effective participation in seminars and delivery of presentations, and listening to and recording information effectively from lectures. You will also develop the accuracy and range of written and spoken language required to use language effectively and appropriately, with clarity and confidence in an academic context.
Alongside your classes, your studies will be supported by an online learning platform, providing you with a range of tasks and activities specifically designed to develop and extend your language and academic skills outside the classroom and to give you more control over your own learning.
Learn about how government bodies affect individuals and what happens when they misuse their power. Study the Human Rights Act and the European Convention on Human Rights to understand how public authorities protect people’s rights. Assessment includes a written assignment and an exam.
Get to grips with the basics of legal study, including how to research and reason legally. Learn about important legal concepts and how lawyers prepare and present cases. Assessments involve practical exercises and written work.
Explore how the UK constitution works and the roles of Parliament and government. Understand how Brexit affects UK and EU laws. Assessment includes written assignments and case studies.
Look at modern legal challenges and how technology impacts law firms. Develop skills that will help you in your future career. Assessment includes practical projects and reflections.
Learn about the basics of contract law, including what makes a contract valid and how to handle issues like breaches and disputes. Assessments include case studies and written assignments.
Understand civil wrongs, like negligence, and how they are addressed in law. Research and study how these principles apply to real-life situations. Assessments include research projects and written work.
Explore the basics of criminology, including why crime happens and its effects on society. Learn about different theories and how they explain crime and deviance. Assessments include research papers and presentations.
Study current topics in criminal justice, like how the system handles issues such as probation and restorative justice. Understand the broader social and political context. Assessment includes case studies and essays.

Progress to your degree
After completing your International Year One programme and achieving the necessary grades, you can progress directly to the second year of your undergraduate degree. By completing this pathway, you will be able to progress to the following degrees:
